Louise Fowler (Head of CETT)
Our vision is to enable each teacher, and therefore each child, to become the best that they can be.
Our teacher training programme is designed to develop ‘standout’ teachers who will make a difference to the lives of the children in our schools and local communities. We passionately believe that all children should be provided with an education that enables them to flourish and succeed, and that disadvantage should never be allowed to hold any child back.
At CETT we promote a child-centred approach to teaching and learning at all times. Our training programme is designed to develop teachers who will be creative, innovative, passionate, knowledgeable, and determined. We believe that these skills and attributes will allow our trainees to become teachers who can inspire children to love learning, to believe in themselves, and to always try their best.
If you train with us at CETT, you will be joining us in our mission to provide all children, no matter what their background, with the opportunity to achieve their full potential. We promise that you will be strongly supported and developed throughout the training programme, with this ultimate goal in mind.
Our School Centred Initial Teacher Training (SCITT)
Our School Centred Initial Teacher Training (SCITT) gives our trainees the unique opportunity to train to teach primary school children in a thriving, multicultural community. You will be joining a course that is school-led within a Trust of schools (Victoria Academies Trust) that are recognised for their innovative and outstanding practice. Recent Ofsted inspections of our schools are all either good or outstanding.
Trainees on our course come from a variety of backgrounds; some are straight from University and others have already had previous careers, both within and outside of education. We welcome all applicants equally.
At Central England Teacher Training SCITT you select 1 of the 2 routes into teaching:
Primary with Early Years
(3 – 7 years)
(5 – 11 years)
We are a values-led teacher training programme
At CETT we share in the values of Victoria Academies Trust. We have five core values that underpin everything that we do, especially the way we act, behave and engage with one other. Our values are not just written down on paper, but are lived and breathed by us in all that we do. They are the blueprint for our success. These values are based on the word FIDES (from the Latin ‘to Trust’).
Focus on Family
Insist on Excellence
Do good as you go
All of the schools across Victoria Academies Trust have these values at their core. We believe that these values help to make CETT and Victoria Academies a unique and special place to train and work. We especially encourage potential trainees who feel that they identify with these values to apply.
What are the benefits of training with CETT?
HANDS ON TRAINING
One of the most significant advantages of training to be a teacher with CETT is that, from day one, you will be immersed in a range of primary school environments, acquiring the knowledge and skills required for effective teaching. Trainees have experience of working with outstanding practitioners and children in all year groups of Primary School from day one of the programme, giving them a head start to their training in a practical ‘hands-on’ approach, within an inspirational learning environment.
Trainees spend the majority of the programme working in schools and learning on the job. However, this is only after trainees have benefited from a pre-attachment phase where they are introduced to their mentors, to one another, and have had the opportunity to spend time in their attachment schools in order to meet staff and children. Our trainees complete their training year with substantial experience of teaching and working within a school, and are therefore very well equipped to make the transition to NQT.
AN INNOVATIVE AND CREATIVE CURRICULUM
Our teacher training programme is based within a Trust of schools that are recognised for their innovative and outstanding practice. At CETT, our trainees are taught to plan and teach lessons which actively engage and encourage children’s creativity, and fully immerse them in the learning experience. We encourage creative, innovative and pioneering approaches to teaching, and this approach is continually demonstrated to trainees throughout their training year through the pioneering teaching which takes place every day in the classrooms across the Trust’s schools.
Undertaking your training with CETT will also provide you with the opportunity to be immersed in the ‘real, immersive and purposeful –RIP’ curriculum that is unique to schools within Victoria Academies Trust. Here you will see examples of immersive teaching that are embedded in a curriculum designed to be linked to real-life, purposeful learning for the children in our schools.
EXCELLENT EMPLOYMENT RATES
We understand that undertaking teacher training is an investment, and we take your future employment seriously. We are thrilled to say that 100% of trainees who completed our programme in 2015/16 and 2016/17 went on to secure employment as NQTs.
Well over half of our trainees (65%) secure employment at schools within Victoria Academies Trust as NQTs, and they continue to benefit from the supportive relationships formed during their training year. Where possible, our vision is to train teachers who will remain within Victoria Academies Trust, serving our local communities and transforming the lives of the children at our schools.
HIGH LEVELS OF SUPPORT
The relatively small number of students on our training programme each year means that we can offer high-quality, individualised support to each of our trainees. We take into account your particular needs, regarding subject knowledge or experience, and do our best to provide the tailored support which will help you most. Access to tutors and mentors is available on a day by day basis throughout the course. CETT trainees are also strongly encouraged to get to know one another and support each other throughout the course. Training session leads, who are expert practitioners, can also be contacted at any point throughout the training year to answer questions and provide advice on their specialist subject.
A STRONG SENSE OF FAMILY
One of our key values at CETT is a focus on family. We see everyone involved in CETT, from trainees to mentors, tutors, and session leaders, as part of our family. Every person that’s involved in delivering our teacher training programme is committed to helping our trainees to become the best teachers that they can be. We aim to provide a ‘personal touch’ and understand the importance of getting to know our trainees as individuals, developing positive and supportive relationships with them. This means that any needs, worries or concerns are responded to quickly and that our students feel looked after and invested in.
ACCESS TO EXPERT PRACTITIONERS
Our trainees greatly value the access that they have to our highly qualified tutors and outstanding current practitioners. Training sessions are led by a variety of specialist staff from within the Trust who are experts in their area of delivery, many of whom are also putting their theory into practice every day in the classroom. This adds significant credibility to the programme and ensures that our trainees are learning from the very best. For students who stay within the Trust after their training year, support from specialist staff continues into the NQT year. Opportunities for career development and growth are also widespread within the Trust.
OUR TRUST SCHOOLS AND COMMUNITY LINKS
There are currently seven schools that form Victoria Academies Trust. These schools offer a wide diversity of contexts for our trainees to experience, all within a partnership of consistently high provision. Our training offers the unique opportunity to learn in a thriving, multicultural community where more than 40 languages are spoken by the children. Trainees visit all of the Trust schools as part of their training year and get to know staff and children from each school.
At CETT and Victoria Academies Trust, serving our local communities and ensuring that the next generation of children receive the opportunity to achieve their full potential is our driving motivation. We often find that a number of our trainee teachers are from, or live within, the local area. We are heavily invested in our local communities, and on the positive impact that our teachers and schools can make within them.
GAINING PGCE, QTS AND 60 MASTERS CREDITS
Training with CETT offers students the opportunity to gain a Post Graduate Certificate of Education (PGCE) and 60 masters credits, accredited by the University of Birmingham, alongside Qualified Teacher Status.
